What Happened on the Internet in 2012?

We arrived the end of 2012 with a lot of changes and developments. Considering this development and the effects of changes in the use of the internet we have made extensive research. With the increase of social networking sites, the use of internet has also increased.

 

We have combined the results of those researches from different sources. You will find below answers for how much of Turkey's population uses the internet, how many active users interested in social media, which of the social networking sites is the most popular one in Turkey, and how many blocked sites still exist with secure internet filtering.

  • Turkey has ranked 27th among 61 countries in the use of the internet in 2012. 44% of the population is using the internet. This percentage was 41% in 2011
  • The 82% of the active internet users in Turkey use social media. This year in Turkey and the world Facebook was announced as the most used social network. Every 3 minutes of 4 spended in social media was in Facebook pages.
  • According to Webrazzi Analytics Turkey placed 7th in the world of Facebook users and 11th for Twitter, with Istanbul being the 12th most ‘'Tweeted'' city.
  • Turkey has come to the point that 71% of the population is using the internet daily. If you look at this year's Internet user profile: 81% used Facebook, 76% sent e-mails, 71% used instant messaging, 67% listened to music, 61% read the news or read an online newspaper, 59% used video chat, and 31% used Twitter.
  • In the world's usage of ‘'Smart Phones'' there was a big increase. The landlines are still used more than the mobile devices for the usage of social network sites. The usage of mobile phone to use Facebook or Twitter was 3 to 1 compare t classic connection. In Turkey 22% of people connect to internet via mobile devices.
  • In Turkey 9% of internet users have done research about brands and this number is above the world's average
  • Turkey has also increased in e-trading as trend goes. With the credit card transactions via internet, Turkey has 157 million of  transaction and 30 billion of payment. In total, e-shopping is 24% of the population.
  • In 2012, the usage of the internet was 61% male and 39% female in Turkey.
